Agia Eirini Patras
A small church, with a huge history..
In the area during the Byzantine period[1] there was the stauropigian church dedicated to Agia Irini, which was built to house the relics of the Saint. Saint Irene had martyred in Magedo, Persia in the 4th century and her relic fled during the Frankish period, to finally end up in Patras.
On March 5, 1231[1] the Latin Archbishop of Patras Adelmos appropriated and transferred from Patras to the West many sacred relics, among which the holy relic of Saint Irene, gifting it to the Hautecombe monastery in Savoy, France. The relic of Saint Irene ,was returned on October 5, 2002 and is today kept in the church of Saint Irene in Riganokambos, which is built near the site where the old church stood.
