Ηoly Vigil - Saint Anastasios neomartyr from Paramythia Thesprotia

November 17 @ 9:30 pm - November 18 @ 12:30 am UTC+2

Saint Anastasios is a neomartyr of the Orthodox Church. He was born in Paramythia, Thesprotia, during the Turkish occupation, around 1730. According to his hagiography, he was martyred as follows: While he was in the fields with other Christians and his sister, the latter was attacked by young Muslims led by the pasha's son, Musa, the who tried to abuse her. Anastasios got involved with them and gave his sister the opportunity to escape. According to Bishop Grigorios Mesaorias, the attack was against many young Christian women. However, the Muslims considered this act offensive and reported it to the Pasha. They said that Anastasios attacked them and that he promised to change his faith and become a Muslim. The arrest and imprisonment of Anastasios was ordered. The Pasha, Musa's father, tried to convince him to convert to Islam in exchange for his freedom and rich gifts. Anastasius refused, and thus was subjected to daily torture. Moussa felt guilty for causing the torture of Anastasios. One day he secretly visited him in prison, whereupon he saw in a vision two angels attending to Anastasios. Anastasius explained the vision to the Muslim and taught him about the Christian faith.
